 TanyaShearin Tanya Shearin
Minister to Children

A native of Ashland, Virginia, Tanya Shearin is a 1992 graduate of Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. Though called to ministry from the age of 16, she found her ministry first to her husband, Vance, and then to her growing family as a stay-at-home homeschool mother of three. Identifying with that initial call, Tanya and her husband organized and directed the non-profit ministry, Life of Hope, for five years to provide clothing, accessories, and hope in Christ to families in and around the Mechanicsville, Virginia area.

Tanya began as Minister to Children in September 2019.

CherylDouglasWalker Rev. Cheryl Douglas-Walker

Cheryl is a native of Richmond and acknowledged her calling in 1994. She was licensed to preach the Gospel in January 2005, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Vincent T. Smith, Sr. at Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Sandston, VA, and she was ordained in 2010 and bonded by the State of Virginia. She graduated from the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond in 2013 with a Master of Divinity in Christian Education.  After completing seminary, she served a 3-year internship at Ginter Park Baptist Church, serving in various leadership roles, such as Pastor of Christian Education and Pastoral Care Pastor. She also trained as an Acting Chaplain at Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Facility and is welcomed as clergy at area health care and funeral home facilities. Cheryl has a sustaining marriage of 23+ years to her husband, Robert, and she has two adult daughters.

Cheryl began as Minister for Outreach in January 2019.

BruceSwartz Bruce Swartz
Music Director

Bruce is a Richmond native and attended Hermitage High School. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a B.A. degree in music education and has been a music educator in Henrico County (middle school band director) for over 30 years.  Since 1970, Bruce has been a trumpet soloist and ensemble trumpet player in many churches throughout the Richmond area. In addition, he is the leader and co-founder of the Richmond-based band "KOS."

Bruce has been the music director at Hunton Baptist Church since 2003 and brings a contagious enthusiasm to the music ministry! In addition to leading the adult choir, Bruce organized a praise band with their own band of musicians and several praise teams who lead the songs. The contemporary service would not be possible without this necessary music ministry.

  Cathy Truslow
Director of Music for Children and Youth
Cathy has been a member of Hunton since 1994.  At that time, the pastor's wife found out that Cathy had a background in music and worked with children -- so began Cathy's service at Hunton!  She has been leading our Children's Choir and our Drama Presentations, including our annual Christmas Pageants, ever since.  As children moved up to the Youth Department, Cathy was approached by some of the parents and the youth about them having a music program as well. Cathy began leading our Youth Choir and directing their Drama Presentations in 2014.

 JuneEanes1 June Eanes
Church Musician

June has been a member of Hunton since 1997. Someone at Hunton found out she had played piano at her home church in Amelia (Mt. Hope Baptist Church), so she was recruited and has been playing piano for Hunton's Worship Services ever since (with a small break to care for her ailing mother). June also plays the keyboard for the Praise Band, sings in the Adult Choir (and is the choir accompanist), and rings in the Adult Handbell Choir. Hunton is very fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated musician in the church family!

 ViWhite
Vi White

Church Ministry Assistant

Vi joined our staff as a fill-in secretary in November of 1997. In January of 1998, she became our regular Church Ministry Assistant. She came with a lot of experience having served as secretary at Winn’s Baptist Church for 20 years, working afternoons. For 14 years she also served as secretary at Shalom Baptist Church, working in the mornings.

Vi and her husband Russ moved to Virginia in 1971 from the state of Maine.  They had an opportunity to move back to Maine in 1978, but decided the South was where their hearts were happiest. They have three married daughters and six wonderful grandchildren. A note of interest -- their oldest daughter married the youngest son of a pastor, who led their whole family to Christ.

Our Lay Leaders

Deacons

Our deacons carry out a biblically-based family ministry plan, and they also oversee the HBC Ministry Teams.

Each member of Hunton (and their families) are assigned to a deacon, who develops a relationship with the member(s) so the deacon can respond to their spiritual needs, life events, and help the member(s) develop and maintain a healthy relationship with the church, growing in their faith and commitment.

Other responsibilities include preparation and service during the Lord's Supper observance, and oversight of the Benevolence Fund (all undesignated offerings received on first Sundays) used to meet the needs of community and church members in crisis.

Other Lay Leaders

HBC has several elected leader positions that advise on church decisions, plan activities and programs, and look towards the future. To see the names of those currently serving as Lay Leaders, see the current HBC Family Directory or contact the church office.
